The Official Downgrader Topic
Let's make one thing clear: this is not a "beg for downgrade" or "when it will come out" topic. This is THE topic that will clear the current doubts on the downgrade.
Let's start with the basics:
Q: What is a "downgrade" ?
A: It's a method or program that will allow replacing a newer firmware with an old firmware.
Q: Do you have downgraders for PSP?
A: No! 3 downgrade types are plausible: software / hardware /method. Software is a program you run with the purpose of reflashing the device (in this case the PSP) WAB and PSP-DEV are working on one. Hardware is a physical device you attach in some way to the console and will reset it (like the modchip by teamX). Downgrade method are steps to make in order like swap and such to fool the console. At the moment, software (and maybe hardware) downgrade are being prepared and will surface soon.
Q: Where can I find any downgrade?
A: You CAN'T. ALL THE DOWNGRADE METHODS ( FOR THE 1.52 AND 2.0)THAT HAVE RISEN ARE FALSE AND MOST LIKELY WILL BRICK THE PSP!
Among the fakes:
- "Connect the pc to console and use the ipod software (music erasing tool) to clean the firmware from the psp. Use the ipods firmware flasher and select version 1.5 to reflash the psp." - Found on a txt on edonkey. fake & false. There is no ipod music erasing tool other than iTunes. The hacked ipod "cleaner tool" will erase (as testemonials stated [I didn't test]). There is simply no way (the ipod firmware flasher doesn't recognize the firmware format of the psp nor the psp being connected) if you manage to erase the psp completely via ipod's software there is no way to put it back. Brick PSP.
- Memory card swap: One memory card with 2.0(hex edited to 2.01) upgrade and in the other an 1.5 upgrade. Swap on White PSP screen.- Appeared remotely over some forums. - Fake, gives "Newer version is installed" error.
- Sargeant007 method of UMD swap - Start One UMD with 2.0 upgrade, swap for another with 1.5 upgrade when the "ac power cord is not plugged" screen. Fake and stupid. Shows an error when you open the umd to do the swap and exits the "upgrade". (I tested and failed)
- Sargeant007 method of UMD swap (continued). You add a tape stick on the umd pin detector, to prevent the message "umd case open". - FAKE AND BRICKS THE PSP. (I tested and bricked my first model)
- Official_WAB_Downgrader_v 0.9_for_PSP_1.5_2.0.rar - <-- found on edonkey networks. It's fake, and does not work. Will not brick the psp though. It will merely say error. (tested myself)
Q: Is there any real downgrade ?
A: Wab/Dev have a really interesting project and they don't seem fake at all.
The teamX seems to have halted their development of the modchip:
Zitat:
Zitat von Daesh(TeamX)
...[TeamX]... is making a simple legal mass storage add-on. They don't want to get into the legal "grey areas" such as downgrading.
TeamX found the possibility of a hardware downgrade. WAB (and other dev groups) are working on software downgrades. Do you understand the signifigance of the differences here?
There is no "non-sharing" of information nor is there any "thumbing of noses." The two downgrade methods are entirely different. All that was meant in that post was that they found the possibility of a hardware downgrade. There are not using it, developping it, or taking it any further than that.
TeamX is simply developping a simple, legal Mass Storage add-on. Downgrades and other such activities are being left to other dev groups.
Thanks for NOT flaming and insulting us in your next post and sounding like a complete tool.
So this takes out the hardware possibility from teamX. You can still reflash the psp by opening the case and use a flasher device (electronics). I highly recommend NOT trying anything similar unless you have the full knowledge of electronics.
Team WAB and PSP-DEV are working on a real downgrader. Official word is that the downgrader is on 98%. In fact the 98% has been rumoured to be on eversince the project was announced.
From the tiny shards of knowledge I have been capturing in the PSP-DEV channel (from Team Members), the progress can be described as this:
There are 4 barriers of security in the 2.0 firmware.
There are 3 barriers of security in the 1.51/1.52 firmware.
The barriers from what I have seen are of follows:
Firmware 1.5X AND 2.0
1- "Newer Firmware version on menu"- only a lower version can "load" the update for a higher version. (broken by hex editing or pbpunpacking the firmware and editing the number of the update for a higher number)
2- "Newer Firmware components' version on run"- only a lower version can "start" the update and change the files for a higher version (after it is loaded).(broken by WAB/PSP-DEV not known how)
3- "Hash check signing" - Hash check must match. ( must be compiled with non-beta official software SDK ) ( apparently not broken yet)
FIRMWARE 2.0
4- ??? - There is an extra "security hole fix" in 2.0, but is already broken by wab
to resume:
3/4 checks are broken for 2.0 (missing barrier 3)
2/3 checks are broken for 1.5X (missing barrier 3)
I wish them best of luck on these.
Q:What about all those videos I see around ?
A: All the fake videos are these:
Phoenix way to downgrade - Fake. Stops the video to switch consoles.
He does it to diss Wab.
Official Wab Downgrader 0.9 - Fake, back image is streched and the original console is the 1.5 with the wab changer (to fake 1.52).
The real videos
Official WAB/DEV video 1 (Video_Final.rar) - This is the first video released by WAB. They hadn't yet broken one of the barriers, so they had to show their progress with a memory stick swap.
Official WAB/DEV video 2 (Downgrader_High_Resoluti on_2.0_WAB_PSPDEV.rar) - This is the second video, with that second barrier destroyed. There is no word on what would happen if the guy on the video hit the "start". Hypothetically, it would give an error in some part of the update.
Q: When will they(WAB/DEV) release that "nifty" downgrade?
A: Not known. The constant answer from DEVs is either "not today" or "unknown". SOmeone from PSP-DEV said that could be at any date between one day to one month, so one can guess wither they are not all working on the downgrader or they simply do the most not to release any info.
Q: Is it true the WAB is releasing the downgrade to those that donate?
A: Hypothetically, they might do it, but they have not did that before, and they have said they wouldn't.
Q: Alot of controversy has been rumoured around the members of the team WAB. What has really happened?
A:
-Yoshihiro DID NOT SAY he'd release the downgrader in September,1st.
-Yoshihiro is not leaving team WAB.
-It is true, Yoshihiro has joined PSP-DEV, but is now a part of both teams and not only WAB or only PSP-DEV.
-It is true, Alonetrio was arrested by the police.
-Alonetrio was released and the matter of which he was arrested was NOT hacking or PSP development.
-WAB did NOT back out on the development if the downgrader. They WILL release.
Q: Where should I go if I wanted to know more and speak to Yoshihiro, WAB or PSP-DEV?
A: You can always go their irc channels.
WAB is irc.wab.com #wab
PSP-DEV is irc-hispano.org #psp-dev
However, it is NOT productive to head for these channels. Keep refreshing the the homesites of WAB or PSP-DEV. The irc channels keep getting overcrowded and they always answer "we have no new info". The programs will be announced on their official homepage sooner or at the same time than in the channel.
Q: But I am in a hurry! I want the downgrader!!!
A: Quoting Alonetrio: "And for those who really want a downgrader TODAY, hey !! just code it ;)"
Hope this has cleared (most) of the doubts....

EDIT:
Downgrader project suspended:
from psp-dev:
We want to announce that the colaboration between the two groups has been completly finished without success. We also want to announce that WAB has been disolved. The relatioship between the two groups were vanishing days ago (some of our members were banned from their server) and there is no progress with the colaboration.
In addition, the downgrader project (never finished) is immediatelly cancelled (it is not an excuse, we can't explain our reasons, but are enough to do this).
and in another news:
This message is about some rumours involved the money of donations. Wab managed their donations and was his responsability. We (psp-dev) recieved from july only 17,72 euros (Thx to Steve P., Stefano S., Francisco Javier E. S. and Rafael R. C.). We want to clarify how the teams works.
Any time we speak about the date of release or if the downgrader was finished, we tried to clarify this situation because it was only a project and can be cancelled at any time. The videos tried to show the progress done at that moment and we never showed a full downgrade.
PsP-Dev never works for money, we could make a lot of money and we refused it to keep our work free.
Thx to all supporters that belive in us
